Cabbage Growing Information
Brassica oleracea var. capitata
Transplant: Start 4-6 weeks before transplant date at 1/4” depth. Soil temperature for germination is 55-75° F.
Spacing: 12-18” apart in rows that are 24-30" apart. Late-season and overwintering varieties are often larger plants and may need to be spaced farther apart.
Growth needs: Heavy feeder that needs adequate fertilization and fertile soil with consistent irrigation. Cabbage varieties are slotted for early, main, late, and overwintering season and have a range of days to maturity. Choose the appropriate varieties for your desired growing season and climate.
Harvest: When heads are dense and of desired size.
Storage: Store at 36° F with high humidity and adequate air circulation. Do not store heads that have diseased outer leaves, as it will encourage the disease to spread. Varieties that are noted for storage can be stored for 4-5 months if harvested at optimum maturity and stored correctly.
