Corn Growing Information Zea mays Direct Seed: When soil is above 65° F for untreated seed of SH2(super sweet) varieties due to susceptibility of seeds to rot and slower growth. For treated SH2 seed, soil should be a minimum of 55-60° F. For non-SH2 and ornamental varieties, and treated seed of SH2, you can sow when soil temperature is 55-60° F. Spacing: 8-12” apart (depending on days to maturity) in rows that are 24” (for early varieties) and 30-48” (for main season varieties). Seed at 1-2” depth. Growth needs: Heavy feeder that requires lots of organic matter and fertilizing. Grows best in well-drained soil, but can grow in heavier soils. In order to avoid cross pollination, all corns need to be isolated from each other if you are planting different colors and different types. Isolation options are as follows: 250 feet between variety plantings, 10 days between maturity, a completely separate field, OR a physical barrier. Please note that untreated seed may have increased chance of poor stand establishment and crop failure. Growers must assume all risk connected with lack of seed treatment. Harvest: When ears are fully developed for fresh corn, about 18-25 days after first silks appear, or husks are dried down for ornamental corn. Ornamental corn can be left out for a few frosts. Storage: For sweet corn, taste is best right after harvest, but can hold up to 4 days in 32° F storage, but sugars will deteriorate quickly. Ornamental corn does not need to be refrigerated, but will need to be cured for a few weeks or until fully dried.
